Trees for Climate Program

We are thrilled to announce that the Friends of Wollaton Park has been awarded a grant from the Trees for Climate programme.

We are thrilled to announce that the Friends of Wollaton Park has been awarded a grant from the Trees for Climate programme, part of the national government-led Nature for Climate Fund delivered by the Greenwood Community Forest.

This programme focuses on long-term environmental benefits, aiming to:

  • Capture carbon to help tackle climate change.
  • Enhance biodiversity by creating new habitats for birds and insects.
  • Protect heritage features and improve the natural connectivity of the landscape.

The grant to Friends of Wollaton Park focuses on the slip gardens in the walled garden area of the park, complementing the 120-tree nursery planted in 2024/2025.

  • This grant is specifically for creating 45 meters of new native hedgerow along the wire fence by A.W.Lymns. It also funds the planting of fruit trees along the north outer wall.
  • A diverse mix of species is stipulated to provide nectar and seeds for local wildlife.
  • The funding covers everything from the initial planting and protective shelters to 15 years of maintenance to ensure these trees thrive for future generations.

Preperation

This weekend (21st February), a group of 12 volunteers started by clearing along the edge of the wire fence in preparation for the planting.
