Saproxylic beetles thrive in dead and decaying trees. They munch away on decomposing wood, helping to return nutrients to the soil, and are part of the food chain.
The UK is home to a staggering 650 different species of Saproxylic beetles, all relying on this special habitat, but surprisingly little is known about them. The study should assist in finding out more.
So next time you see a rotting part of a tree in the park remember it’s a luxurious apartment building for these fascinating beetles!
